Earlier this year Equity Foundation awarded a small grant to Beacon Counselling to support their fundraising and awareness campaign as part of Stockport Beer Festival. The festival provided a platform for Beacon volunteers to engage with the general public and promote the free service in a fun and informal setting and with the 50 volunteers who helped out over the 3 days, they were able to reach over 5,000 people!
The funding was used to cover volunteer expenses, which the charity found a huge help “By funding the volunteers’ expenses and refreshments the grant allowed us to spend the money we would have used on these items to put them into providing services. Snacks and refreshments was a great incentive to our volunteers as shifts are busy and can be tiring. Having upbeat and happy volunteers made a huge difference to us as they were the face of our bar and encouraged people to come and buy our beers and take part in our fundraising games, which all helped to generate income. While the event is fun, volunteers are also able to learn new skills which they are able to use in different areas of life, these include; providing excellent customer service, handling money, confidence building, improving self-esteem and understanding their contribution.”
The day also provided a brilliant platform to fund raise with festival goers, meaning that the charity is able to continue to provide services and not reliant of applying for grants, “The money we have raised will be used to keep funding much needed counselling services for people dealing with emotional and mental distress. Anyone at any time can experience mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, trauma or crises. They are able to transform and grow through counselling and with more funds we are able to provide more appointments and in turn help more people. We receive feedback from clients throughout the year and we found that many of them told us that since their counselling they had either; taken up volunteering, found employment, started a new hobby or joined a club and their relationships with others had improved.”
We’re very proud to be able to provide support to help Beacon continue it’s vital services- and it goes to demonstrate that with a small amount of funding you can have a huge impact and attract even more income in a way that directly engages with local people.
