Social Enterprise

A social enterprise is a business with a social purpose – they are often called “profit for purpose” organisations and play an increasingly important role in the economy – a 2015 survey by SE UK found that there are approximately 70,000 social enterprises in the UK, contributing £24 billion to the economy and employing nearly a million people. The sector is responsible for some of the most innovative and people focused solutions to modern issues. Over half of all social enterprises in the UK are less than five years old so investment is required to enable growth.

As they straddle the business and social worlds, social enterprises sometimes get lost and find it difficult to access support. To address this, Equity Foundation and Stockport Council are working collaboratively to develop a joint approach to supporting Social Enterprise in Stockport.

We have launched a pilot project for one year, to provide support to social businesses with the potential to generate income and find new solutions to social problems.  As voted for by social entrepreneurs based in Stockport, the network has been called Stockport with Purpose.
